The Anatomy of the Finance Function
So what is a finance function exactly? Every business has one, whether it is handled by an owner, a bookkeeper, or an internal or external team. Its structure varies based on the business, its industry, and its stage of growth. As a business grows, it typically needs greater accuracy, insight, and capacity from its finance function. At NorthPac, we view the finance function through four connected responsibilities:
1 - Financial Operations
What it may cover: Accounts payable and receivable, payroll coordination, reconciliations, journal entries, close processes, and the chart of accounts.
Why it matters: Keeps the financial records accurate, organized, and current.
2 - Reporting and Compliance
What it may cover: Monthly financial statements, management reporting, tax and statutory filing support, lender reporting, and audit or year end support.
Why it matters: Gives management and other stakeholders information they can rely on.
3 - Planning and Performance
What it may cover: Budgets, forecasts, project or product profitability, sales analysis, KPIs, and performance reviews.
Why it matters: Shows what is happening in the business, what is likely ahead, and where management should focus.
4 - Cash and Capital Management
What it may cover: Cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, collections, payment timing, debt, covenant monitoring, and funding readiness.
Why it matters: Helps ensure the business can meet its obligations and invest in opportunities at the right time.
Strategic Finance
Strategic finance draws on and connects all four responsibilities. It uses reliable records, timely reporting, practical forecasts, and a clear view of cash to help leadership make better decisions. That may include deciding when to hire, how to price work, whether a project is profitable, how much funding is required, where margins are slipping, or whether the business is ready to grow.
The goal is not to build more finance process for its own sake. The goal is to create a finance system that is dependable, efficient, and useful, so leadership can make decisions sooner and with greater confidence. We help growing businesses build the finance function they need now, while creating a foundation for the business they want to become. We strengthen the core financial work, improve the systems and reporting around it, and bring the strategic financial perspective that is often missing before a full-time CFO is justified.
Technology, Data, and AI
Technology & Data
A finance function is only as useful as the systems, processes, and data behind it. We help businesses make practical use of their existing technology and identify where better systems or integrations would create a meaningful improvement. This may include accounting and ERP systems, expense management tools, payroll and payment workflows, document management, reporting tools, and the connection between operational and financial information. The goal is to utilize technology but only to the extent it benefits the business. That starts with the fundamentals: clear workflows, defined ownership, accurate data, appropriate controls, and reporting that management and other stakeholders can actually use. With that foundation in place, the finance function can produce timely information, reduce manual work, and scale with the business.
AI - The Trillion Dollar Acronym
AI is quickly becoming part of how businesses operate. The pace of change can make it feel as though every business needs to adopt the newest tool immediately, but that is rarely the right approach. NorthPac takes a practical view. There is no doubt that AI can provide benefits to any business, but like every other integration, it takes thoughtful planning and resources. Not to mention security considerations. For some businesses, the opportunity may be straightforward: reducing repetitive administrative work, improving internal documentation, supporting research and analysis, or making recurring reporting easier to prepare and use. For others, the right next step may be strengthening the underlying processes, systems, and data before introducing AI enabled workflows.
A useful AI solution requires more than a subscription. It needs intentional workflow design, reliable information, appropriate access controls, and most importantly, human review. AI can support the work, but it does not replace financial judgment, management accountability, or a well designed control environment. Where there is a worthwhile opportunity, we may recommend starting with a focused use case, a defined budget, and clear measures of success. Test it, review the results, and expand only when it is genuinely improving the way your team works.
How Engagements Work
Every engagement is tailored to the business, but our work follows a clear progression: understand the current state, set practical priorities, implement improvements, and provide support as the business evolves.
1 - Discovery
We begin by understanding your business, your objectives, and how the finance function operates today. This includes reviewing your people, processes, systems, reporting, data quality, cash management practices, and immediate pressure points.
The objective is to identify what is working, what is creating unnecessary risk or effort, and where better financial information or process discipline would have the greatest impact.
2 - Planning
We translate the findings into a practical, prioritized plan. This sets out the work to be completed, the desired outcomes, who is responsible, the expected timing, and the systems or resources required.
Not every issue needs to be solved at once. We focus first on the actions that strengthen the foundation, reduce the most material risks, and support the business’s immediate goals.
3 - Implementation
Plans only create value when they are put into practice. We work alongside your team to implement the agreed priorities, whether that means improving processes, building reporting, strengthening controls, cleaning up data, implementing technology, developing forecasts, or supporting a finance hire.
The approach is practical and hands-on. We aim to create changes that fit your team and your goals.
4 - Ongoing management and advisory
A finance function is not static. As a business grows, adds people, takes on financing, enters new markets, or faces new operational challenges, its financial needs change.
We can provide ongoing fractional CFO, controller, or finance advisory support to help management maintain momentum, monitor performance and cash, improve decision making, and address issues before they become larger problems.
